Paradoxically and incredibly deftly, Leonards delights all those who want or don’t want to think, who love or don’t love culture, or who rejoice or don’t rejoice in nature.
His project next to the Latvian National Opera House is comprised of a series of birdcages – each birdcage will be in the form of some world famous opera house. Milan’s La Scala or the Bayreuth Festspielhaus could well appear alongside Riga’s White House.
As they feed the birds, kids may not sense that in this work of art, nature has merged with haute culture; even their parents may not realise this. However, the nice ladies who make up the usual, instead of opening night, opera-going public, understand everything and smile.
