In November 2021, with the support of the philanthropist Ināra Tetereva, three gilded stars of the Freedom Monument were illuminated. Her donation made it possible to purchase special lighting equipment, which will in the future allow the golden stars to shine even in the dark.
The three stars, which the image of Freedom in the form of a young woman raises in the sky, symbolize the historical regions of Latvia - Kurzeme, Vidzeme, and Latgale. The great sculptor Kārlis Zāle also named his Freedom Monument project - "Shine like a star!". Ināra Tetereva, the founder of the Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation, made a significant donation of 20,000 euros for this purpose.
"The Freedom Monument is a symbol of our nation's freedom and independence. More than eighty years ago, it was built thanks to the donations of Latvian citizens - the Freedom Monument was a symbol of faith in Latvia's future. We are currently living in a difficult time, where many lost their faith in the shadow of the pandemic. By illuminating the Freedom Monument, we will also try to light the light in many hearts and minds, so that we all succeed in believing in Latvia again. I am honored that I was given the opportunity to provide funding for the illumination of three golden stars, and I am sure that these will be able to illuminate the future path of our country and our people in the name of prosperity and growth," says philanthropist Ināra Tetereva.
Chairman of the board of the Freedom Monument Lighting Foundation, ex-president Valdis Zatlers admits that the donation of the Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation will reach every resident and guest of Riga who will look up at the monument during the dark hours of the day. Now the three stars of the Freedom Monument will also shine in the dark.
The special lights for the illumination of the stars of the Freedom Monument were produced by one of the most recognized companies in the world, Color Kinetics, which specializes in the production of architectural lights. The lamps were specially ordered according to the instructions of Latvian light specialists, they have a very narrow angle, and the lampposts are located away from the Freedom Monument on the Old Riga side so that their rays accentuate the three golden stars of the Freedom Monument.
The history of the Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation's support for projects related to the symbol of freedom and independence of our nation began in 2015.
At that time, in honor of the day of the proclamation of Latvia and the 80th anniversary of the Freedom Monument, the art project "Look into the eyes of FREEDOM" was created. In it, the young artists and teaching staff of the Latvian Art Academy captured in a seemingly playful form what they are proud of - freedom, their belonging to Latvia, its culture, and art. Self-portraits of artists with the symbol of Latvian statehood, national unity, independence, freedom, and national art were made at a height of 42 meters.
In 2015, for the first time in the history of Latvian photography, the Freedom Monument was photographed from this angle. In 2021, with the support of the foundation, the symbol of the people's freedom rose to the light and now shines even in the dark!
