In Latvia, several dozen charity kitchens operate under the auspices of charity organisations. In these kitchens, thousands of vulnerable people and people in need often receive the only hot meal of the day.
The charitable program "A Piece of Bread" allowed non-profit organisations to receive support for the arrangement and improvement of charity kitchens for more convenient, rational, and cost-effective management.
From 2021 to 2025, the foundation's program has enabled 15 charity kitchens in 11 cities to purchase new equipment, inventory, and carry out repairs. Today and in the future, these long-term improvements will allow them to work more comfortably and economically, allowing the poor and vulnerable to regularly receive a meal.
During the years of operation of the program, the Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation has supported the work of charity kitchens in Rīga, Bauska, Iecava, Vangaži, Varakļāni, Daugavpils, Valmiera, Jelgava, Smiltene, Liepāja and Saldus. The foundation has provided the funds for the purchase of equipment, inventory, and furniture, as well as for the repair of premises. During the work season 2022/2023, due to a significant increase in the demand for hot meals in charity kitchens and a rapid rise in prices of energy resources, non-profit organisations also received support for the full or partial payment of energy (gas, electricity, etc.) bills to ensure the work of charity kitchens.
Funding was allocated to 29 projects worth EUR 119`110,-. In these charity kitchens, at least 42 450 portions of hot meals are served every month and up to half a million portions per year. The summary of projects supported in 2021 - 2025 is available in Latvian.
The Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation provided significant support to the operation of dozens of charity kitchens throughout Latvia, also previously, in the period from 2010 to 2016, by co-financing the furnishing of kitchens and the preparation of three million servings of hot meals. Read about these activities in the section Charitable Programme “A Piece of Bread” - Meals for the People in Need (2013 - 2016) and “Shared table - support for a hot meal” (2010 - 2013). The aim of the charity program "A Piece of Bread" is to give vulnerable people the opportunity to vulnerable people to receive a warm meal regularly.
Currently, the implementation of the program activities has ended. The supported charity kitchens are operating as usual, thanks to previously provided funding for equipment purchases and improvements. A new support within our program is expected in 2026.
