Tactile Freedom Monument is unveiled. 18.11.2022

The tactile Freedom Monument was created with the financial support of the Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation so that blind and partially sighted people could get to know one of the main symbols of our country by touch.

  • The tactile Freedom Monument was unveiled on Latvia's birthday - November 18, 2022, in Freedom Square, across from the original created by Kārlis Zāle and unveiled on November 18, 1935.

  • It was created so that blind and partially sighted people could get to know one of the main symbols of our country by touch.

  • This special bronze miniature was created by sculptor Ivars Miķelsons on a scale of 1:50. I. Miķelsons says: "This miniature tactile object is, of course, first of all intended for blind or partially sighted people, people with special needs. It was important to create it in a way, that people in wheelchairs can be present, so that there are access lanes along which you can come with a special cane and find this object. All these things had to be considered.”

  • Responding to the call, the foundation dedicated the amount needed to complete the creation of the tactile Freedom Monument. This investment continues the support of the Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation for projects related to the symbol of freedom and independence of the Latvian people.

  • The tactile monument is also accompanied by a plaque with a text in Braille, as well as information about the history of the sculptor Kārlis Zāle Freedom Monument in Latvian and English, voiced by the actors of the New Riga Theater, Vilis Daudziņš and Marija Linarte.
