Under the Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation’s "Art in Public Space" programme, Aigars Bikše’s permanent environmental art object "The Girl with the Shoe" has been unveiled at the University of Latvia’s Botanical Garden.

  • This 6.2 metre high sculpture that is made from aluminium and wood is an impressive story about a girl who has lost a shoe and therefore taken the roof off a house in order to find it.

  • The practical goal of the "Art in Public Space" programme is to create is to create permanent works of contemporary art for installation in the urban environment. The leitmotif for the programme is THE JOY OF THOUGHT, which serves to emphasise that contemporary art in the urban environment can be a source of positive surprises, paradoxes, global influences, as well as being a catalyst for thought.

  • Aigars Bikše was one of the winners of the "Riga Smiles Again" competition organised by the Foundation in 2014. He is a graduate of the Riga Secondary School of Applied Arts’ Sculptural Department (1989) and the Art Academy of Latvia’s Sculptural Department (1997). He holds a Master’s Degree in Art (2000), and is a tutor (from 1998), docent (from 2000), and Associated Professor (from 2008) at the Art Academy of Latvia.
