Since 2012, the Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation has been the most important driving force behind community philanthropy in Latvia. It is helping to consolidate and develop community philanthropy in Latvia, providing support for the operation of existing community foundations and for the establishment of new community foundations regionally.

Community philanthropy is the targeted securing of money, time, skills or other resources to meet requirements that benefit the public in a specific geographic community – in cities or districts. It improves and develops the quality of life in the relevant community by:

  • resolving local problems;
  • encouraging collaboration between the non-profit, state and private sector;
  • developing local charitable traditions;
  • implementing projects of importance to local society;
  • providing residents with the opportunity to play an active role in the growth of their neighbourhood.

These objectives are attained by community foundations - charitable organisations, which ascertain public needs within their neighbourhood, attract donations and other resources in support of the vital goals of the residents in their district, and manage the fulfilment of these aims.

Community philanthropy is an international movement, which facilitates positive changes in local communities in just about every continent of the world. Globally, there are 1,864 active community foundations, of which 671 are in Europe. Of these, nine are in operation in Latvia: in Talsi, Lielvārde, Valmiera, Alūksne and Ape, Kandava, Limbaži, Middle Latgale, Ķekava and Liepāja. They span 26 municipalities and almost 300,000 residents.

Among the Baltic states, Latvia is the only country in which community philanthropy has taken root and which can reflect on 15 years of work in this field.

In implementing this programme, the Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation is collaborating with the Community Foundation Movement. Its goal is to encourage community philanthropy, the active involvement of residents in Latvia’s regions and to represent Latvia internationally.

Since 2012, Latvia’s community foundations have attracted EUR 1,3 million, making it possible to fulfil the aspirations of local residents in hundreds of towns and districts.
